3 Secrets to Maintaining A Powerful Mindset

Your mindset is your greatest asset. If you learn to master your mind you will be able to live your best life, your happiest life. You will be able to create the success you want in your business and in your life.

When people are starting a business or growing a business; they often under-estimate the power of the mind and the part it plays in creating success.

I have to say that this is MY FAVOURITE thing to talk or write about. I am deeply passionate about why some people go on to create incredible success and why some people don’t! Even siblings who have been brought up in exactly the same way; with the same opportunities and why some can go on to create multiple millions and live a life of their dreams and others can end up with nothing; living a life of pain, doing drugs, alcohol or go into crime.

Powerful Mindset

Fundamentally what I discovered along the way through my journey and having read thousands of books, completed 100’s of courses and having worked with billionaires, multi-millionaires and other people who have created huge success in their life across business, sports, science, education; is that they all had the same magic ingredient; a powerful mindset! They have the ability to master their mind, through the good, the bad and the ugly.

How do you keep your mind strong especially when the chips are down?

What can you do. . .

Secret 1 – Conquer your mountain

Business Journey
On my journey I’ve realised in business and life is; the real challenge is how do we learn to keep our mind strong when things aren’t going well, when we’re not living the life that we want or when we’re going through a rough patch or having a difficult time of things? When things are going well we tend to stay on the treadmill of life and it takes all our effort to keep  up with the ever increasing demands. We tend not to jump off and look back in to see what is really going on. When things are going ‘well’ or when we have ‘everything we want’ we tend to be happy. It is when we don’t get what we want that our mindset changes, we become more negatively focused and start blaming everyone and everything.

We need to conquer our mountain: our business, relationships, health and well-being and finances. We need to own everything that is happening in our life right now. We need to face the mirror and be honest. What is going on? Where are you fairing well? What’s not working so well for you? Are you in a job that you hate and every Sunday night you are filled with dread at the thought of going back to work? Or are you in a relationship that is not serving you and you don’t feel happy? Or is your business not where you want it to be? Or do you have some health challenges? Or perhaps you are not making enough money to live the life that you want? Whatever it is for you. You need to face it head on. You need to own it.

It is hard to maintain a positive mindset when life doesn’t work out as we expect or plan.

It is an area in life that we all struggle with and it can often be a rollercoaster with the ups and downs. It is not like achieving a degree, or diploma or a certificate in something where you have it for life. Your mindset is continually changing. Life is happening and it is affecting you in some way so in response to that; things go up and down.

On my journey in life I’ve learned more when I faced adversity and when things have not worked out or gone as planned than I have when things have. The same can be said for thousands of people I’ve worked with and studied.

What’s going on in your life right now and understand where things are at. Look for new meaning in why you are where you are. Think about the lessons you have learned and how this will set you on a better path.

Imagine for a moment that life is unfolding exactly as it is meant to be. When things ‘don’t go well’ I see it as a nudge into a new direction, a new trajectory which often turns out to be a better direction.

With the financial crash in 2008 I pretty much lost everything. My world as I knew it was over or at least I thought it was at the time. I found myself in a negative space and blaming everyone and everything for my downfall. I very much felt like I was in the passenger seat on life. I believed it was the worst thing that could ever happen. And in fact; it was the best thing! I had the time and space to jump off the treadmill of life and look inward. To really understand where I was at, understand who I am and why I’m here. I became truly conscious of my purpose. Without being in the doldrums of despair I would not have taken the time to dive deep inside to understand myself more fully and to do the immense work to get out of it.

Secret 2 – Your Thoughts and Beliefs Shape Your Reality

Our thoughts shape our reality. We are deliberate creators and the power is within each one of us to create the life we want.

In 2008 when I was at my lowest point; to get myself out of the hole I created it, all started with focusing on my thoughts and beliefs. I needed to understand the thoughts I was thinking and the beliefs I was carrying around that didn’t serve me.

It is super important to be conscious of what you’re thinking about. I had to face to mirror by being honest with myself. Back then most of the thoughts I was thinking were negatively focused across every aspect of my life. For you right now, are your thoughts by and large positive or negative?

When I was asked the question about what I was thinking about; I, didn’t really know! I would have said that I was a positive person, with a glass half full approach to life and I think up to that point I was. I needed a simple exercise to help me figure it out.

I used a notebook and drew a line down the page and created a positive column and negative column. I needed to do an inventory of what was going on. If we know what our baseline is; we know what we can work with. Every time I had a positive thought; I would draw a line under the positive column and every time I had a negative thought; I drew a line under the negative column.

At the end of the day and week I would tally up the numbers and I was shocked there was so much negativity going on.

It was very clear for me that I needed to do something about it.

I needed to change my thinking; switch my negative thoughts to more positive thoughts, thoughts that served me.

Business Dreams

What is a thought?

A thought is something we create; something we give our attention to or the mental activity on a subject. A belief if only a thought that we keep thinking over and over.

I then set myself a task each day in my notebook to journal about the negative thoughts I was thinking to see the patterns and to understand them and uncover where they came from.

When I became conscious of my thoughts; I worked hard to clean them up to make sure I had more positive than negative.  Our mind is like a muscle and it needs daily exercise. It’s important that we train it in the right way; to ensure it serves us better.

We go to the gym to take care of our body, or run, walk, cycle, dance or a myriad things.  We also need to take care of our mind activities. It requires daily attention.

We need to water our garden every day and stop the weeds from taking over.

Developing a strong mindset starts with our thoughts and beliefs.

It’s important to think thoughts in the moment.  Observe the world as it is not past or future – just as is!

I love this quote. Norman Vincent Peel says

Change your thoughts change your world

We get what we focus on whether that’s positive or negative.

We often find we obsess on certain thoughts that goes on to create a looping activity where we run it over and over in our mind again and again making ourselves feel bad and suffer unnecessarily.

Dr Deepak Chopra says that 90% of the stuff that we worry about never happens. Think about how much energy and mental capacity we spend worrying about things that won’t happen.

Beliefs are only a thought you keep thinking.

What beliefs do you have that serve you well? What beliefs do you have that don’t serve you?

As a young kid I always remember my Dad telling me that I could do anything, be anything and have anything I want in the world if I work hard enough for it. It stayed with me because I heard it again and again and it became a belief from deep within.

What beliefs do you have that serve you? Perhaps you believe you are lucky, successful, that you can do anything you put your mind to or always approach new things with vigour, or you love learning, or you are a good person, people like you and want to be around you. You are competent, you can trust others, you are good enough, you do matter. These are just some of the positive beliefs you have.

What negative beliefs do you have that don’t serve you?

Perhaps you are saying you’re not good enough, you’re not loveable, you’re not relationship material, you’re not a good friend, daughter, son, mother, father, brother sister, or you believe life is difficult,  or you’re not smart enough, attractive enough, or you are always going to struggle to create success, make money, build a business. You believe you don’t need help from anyone.  You can’t trust anyone including yourself and someone else is to blame. Whatever it is for you.

Have you always wanted to start a business and you just don’t believe you can?

If you believe this to be true; you will give up before you even try!

What beliefs do you have right now that are holding you back?  What are you not doing because you don’t believe you can?

It can be difficult to break old habits and patterns of thoughts and beliefs that don’t serve us. Start with the best feeling thought you can from where you are at every time. Just reach for the slightly better feeling thought.

Replace your negative thoughts and stories with better stories. Start reprogramming your mind and watch life unfold the way you want it to.

Start with small steps and take action every single day. Keep a journal and dive deep within to understand your patterns of behaviour. It’s like a system reboot or upgrade; you need a new application, a better way of thinking that will serve you better.

Secret 3 – Find the Sunshine in Each Day

Happy in Business

It’s about thriving not just surviving. We are on this planet and our goal is happiness. To live a blissful life. Joseph Campbell says “follow your bliss”. Make this your focus every day.

Do what you are passionate about and what you love as opposed to doing what you hate for a pay cheque.

If you can learn how to master your mind you will thrive in any environment. No matter what your circumstances. The happier you are, the more confidence and self-esteem you exude and therefore the rocket fuel needed to take action.

Focus on what you can control; not on what you can’t. You can control two things in life; your actions and your attitude.

If you are not in control attachment to outcome vanishes. If you want to be happy; live in the here and now. Learn how to do the best you can in every moment. Life is now and life is amazing.

The time is now.

What daily habits can you create to maintain a strong mind? Create daily habits that become routine. It takes 30 days to form a new habit.  Every day spend at least 30 minutes on your personal development. Have an attitude of gratitude

Write in your journal regularly; this will be a window into your soul.  Write about your learnings, default thinking patterns, what you are grateful for, the blessings you have in your life.  Learn from what’s going on, recognise the patterns and commit to working on.

What are you dreaming about? What is going on in your dreams? How do they make you feel?  Write about them it’s often a great indicator on how you are feeling.

What can you learn from them?

Imagine the best day in your life what would it look like? Where are you, who are you with? What are you doing? How does it make you feel? Hang on to that feeling.

You become your environment. Who do you have in your circle that gets it and is supportive? Have great people around you. Can do people, people with know-how, will improve conversations. If you play tennis with a great tennis player; it will raise your level, you can learn. Greatness brings greatness out of others. Surround yourself with winners.

Life is about thriving not just surviving.

If you can learn how to master your mind you will thrive in any environment. No matter what your circumstances.

What strategies do you have in place to build resilience, and maintain inner strength to maintain your core?

Quieten your mind. Think a better feeling thought. Be outdoors in nature.

Have a bike ride, run, hike, kayak, dance, meditate, do yoga.  Whatever it is for you that makes you feel alive.

Be in the moment. Look for the best in where you are at now, as opposed to when you’re over there you will be happy. When you make 100,000 you’ll be happy or a million or when you lose 10 pounds or when you can run a marathon in sub 3 hours or . . .

Make the best of now. Reach for your best feeling thought from where you are right now.

Focus on what you are grateful for first thing in the morning and last thing at night every single day.

I am grateful for the opportunity to impact lives, to help people to live a life on their terms, to have freedom, my health to fully participate in life, to have everything I want / need. Incredible family and friends; people that love me unconditionally, the opportunity to be here to be able to use this time and make the most of every day.

Do the things you LOVE often. Running, playing piano / guitar, painting, writing, hanging out with kids, family, whatever it is for you.

Smile lots. Have the right people in your circle; you become your environment.

Talk to people, share, stay connected. Connection is fundamental for well-being.

Set a plan and work on and take action each and every day.

Check in with yourself to see how you are doing.  Who are you showing up as in the world? At work,  home, in relationships, in your health and wellness across every aspect of life. Are you playing full out or just dipping your toe in the water?

We often think about the people we most admire in the world and the characteristics and traits they have. Be your own hero; it’s all inside of you! Demonstrate the qualities, characteristics and traits that you admire in others each and every day. It’s about setting yourself up for success. Take small steps and the action required and build momentum until you become unstoppable. Life is like a theatre production – no matter how big or small the part you want to play, it is up to you!
